On December 24, 2016, MP Rona Ambrose, interim leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the leader of the official opposition, issued the following statement on the occasion of Chanukah:
“At Sundown this evening, homes across the country will be filled with friends and family as they gather in celebration to mark the beginning of Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights.
Chanukah marks the triumph of freedom over oppression, of good over evil, and of light over darkness. It is an important reminder that the pursuit of justice and freedom is righteous, and a moral imperative.
Over two thousand years ago, a steadfast group of Jewish believers overcame persecution and courageously repelled their oppressors, liberating Jerusalem and reclaiming the Holy Temple.
The eight-day holiday is celebrated by the nightly lighting of a menorah, to commemorate the miracle of Chanukah.
For all Canadians, Chanukah provides a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the importance of faith, freedom, and tradition, while recognizing the vast and vibrant contributions of Canada’s Jewish community in building our country. The Jewish community has always shared and furthered our common values of democracy, the rule of law, inclusiveness, and religious freedom.
On behalf of the Conservative caucus and the Conservative Party of Canada, I want to wish everyone celebrating a very Happy Chanukah.
