Ontario to strengthen economic, cultural ties with Qatar, UAE

Deputy Premier Deb Matthews and Minister of International Trade Michael Chan are visiting ( January 27 – February 3) the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar on a trade mission “to strengthen economic, political and cultural ties” with the Gulf states.

According the official statement, Matthews and Chan will engage with government and private sector organizations in the UAE and Qatar to generate new economic activities while continuing to strengthen trade, investment and innovation partnerships in sectors such as information and communications technology, agri-food, cleantech, higher education and infrastructure.

While in Dubai, they will also lead a delegation of 20 Ontario companies exhibiting at Arab Health 2017 to promote a wide range of next-generation Ontario-made life sciences technologies, products and services. In 2015, two-way trade between Ontario and the Gulf Corporation Council Region increased by 16 per cent to $1.42 billion.

In recent years, Qatar has been accused of financing terrorist jihadist groups. Speaking with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar, admitted funding

Islamic groups in Syria, Libya and Egypt, but insisted that these are not terrorist organizations.
