Thousands gathered on Saturday, February 4, 2017 in front of the American Consulate in Toronto to protest the policy of US President Donald Trump. The demonstration was organized by Black Lives Matter – Toronto (BLM TO) – the self proclaimed “coalition of Black Torontonians resisting anti-Black racism, state-sponsored violence and police brutality” – that has launched a nation-wide campaign entitled “National Days of Action Against Islamophobia & Deportations.”
BLM-TO has issued an official statement accusing “white supremacy” and “white nationalism” of “terrorizing” black communities. Its leaders, Yusra Khogali and Alexandria Williams, read at the protest a list of demands from the federal government:
condemning Trump’s executive order on temporarily banning immigration from seven nations
opening Canada-USA border
ending racist, anti-refugee, anti-Black, Islamophobic and anti-immigrants policy
repealing Zero Tolerance for Barbaric Cultural Practices Act and anti-terror legislation such as Security Certificates and Bill C51
In her short speech, Yusra Khogali, who has recently received Toronto’s William P. Hubbard Award for Race Relations, portrayed Canada as a country that was founded on genocide, racism and slavery implying that these policies are being implemented by the current federal government. She accused Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of being a “liar”, “hypocrite”, “white supremacist” and “terrorist”, advising the cheering crowd not be fooled by Trudeau’s “ liberal bullshit.”
The following is the transcript of Yusra Khogali’s at the beginning of the protest:
When this shooting happened [terrorist attack on Quebec City mosque on January 29, 2017] there was a hashtag that went viral on social media saying that we need to pray for Quebec City.
Quebec City is a white supremacist settler colony. [crowd: shame] When Justin Trudeau responded to the Muslim ban, that this coward, this white supremacist coward, [US President] Donald Trump, put forward, what did Justin Trudeau say? He said he wanted to accept everyone who’s not allowed into the U.S. border to Canada. [crowd cheering]
Don’t cheer. Do not cheer, because we know what exactly that is. We know what that is. We know what the manipulation is, is what this country is founded on – erasing and silencing of the real history of this land, the genocide of the indigenous people, and which the state is found on. The enslavement and genocide of black people which the state is founded on. The intentional slavery of racialized people in which this state is founded on.
When Justin Trudeau says that he is a liar! He’s a hypocrite! He is a white supremacist! Terrorist! [crowd: shame] That is what he is. Do not be fooled by his liberal bullshit. Do not be fooled.
When [Toronto] Mayor John Tory said that Toronto is a sanctuary for refugees when black people are being murdered in the City?! We have cautions. What happened to Andrew Loko? What happened to Jermaine Carby? What happened to Abdirahman Abdi? How is the City a sanctuary when black people are being murdered so mercilessly? How is the City a sanctuary?
We have to rise up and what? [crowd: fight back]. Rise up and what? [crowd: fight back]. Rise up and what? [crowd: fight back]. Because we will not be moved. We will not be moved. We will not be moved. We are the people. We have the power. Look at us. We have the numbers. We are the people. We have the power. We have the numbers. Don’t you ever forget that! They make us… forget that all the time, but we realize this – when we come together, we can do anything. [crowd: cheering]
