Jewish and Christian Kabbalah in the Seventeenth Century

The Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies presents a lecture from Israeli professor on Kabbalah in the 17th century. This event is free of charge and does not require registration.

It will take place Monday, February 6, from 4pm to 6pm in the Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Toronto.

Yossi Chajes is a senior lecturer and associate professor in the Department of Jewish History at the University of Haifa. In this lecture, Professor Chajes will be exploring the work of Christian Knorr von Rosenroth (1636–1689), a Christian Hebraist and Kabbalist who mastered Jewish Kabbalah.

Rosenroth published his “Unsurpassed Description of the Kabbalah in Latin,” the two volume Kabbala denudata in Sulzbach and Frankfurt in 1677 and 1684, respectively.

Through a focus on the visual paratexts of Rosenroth’s work, the lecture will show how Kabbalistic diagrams of his own invention were subsequently appropriated by Jewish kabbalists.
