Jihad explained in Toronto mosque celebrating Ontario Islamic Heritage Month

The first Ontario Islamic Heritage Month was celebrated on October 29, 2016 also at Jam’e Abu Bakr Siddique Masjid, a Sunni mosque located at 2665 Lawrence Ave. East in Toronto.

The mosque opened its doors to non-Muslims to learn about the true Islam from Islamic literature that was given away, by listening to speeches of Muslim imams and activists, participating in a Q&A session and a tour of the mosque.

The guest speaker at the event was Liberal MP Salma Zahid who said that Canada and Islam share the same basic value of equality that “makes us true Canadian.” She expressed her hope that such events will help young Muslim Canadians to learn about their religion and culture.

CIJnews obtained a copy of a book “Toward Understanding Islam” by Abul A’la Mawdudi that was handed out at the event. Abul A’la Maududi was the founder of the Jamaat-e-Islami, the largest Islamic organisation in Asia, affiliated with the global movement of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The following are excerpts from the book:

Disbelief is also a form of tyranny. The worst, in fact, of tyrannies. And what is “Tyranny?” It is an act of cruel and unjust use of any force or power… (P. 7)

But the person who disobeys God and resorts to disbelief perpetrates the greatest of injustices, for he uses all the God-given powers of body and mind to rebel against his natural state and becomes an unwilling instrument in the drama of disobedience… In this manner he establishes a reign of tyranny… And disbelief is not mere tyranny. It is, at the very least, sheer rebellion, ingratitude and treachery… (P. 8)

Such a man will destroy the peace and the calm of life on earth: tyranny and arrogance, destruction and decimation will follow… (P. 9)

DEFENSE OF ISLAM

The defense of Islam is not a fundamental belief but its importance has been repeatedly emphasized in the Qur’an and Sunnah. It is essentially a test of our sincerity as believers in Islam. If we do not defend a friend of ours against plots or assaults from his enemies, nor care for his needs, we are indeed false pretenders of friendship.

In the same way, if we profess belief in Islam, we must jealously guard and uphold the prestige of Islam. Our sole guide for our conduct must be the interests of Muslims at large and the service of Islam in the face of which all our personal considerations must sink low.

JIHAD

Jihad is a part of this overall defense of Islam. Jihad means to struggle to the utmost of one’s capacity. A man who exerts himself physically or mentally or spends his wealth in the cause of God is indeed engaged in jihad. But in the language of the Divine Law, this word is used specifically for the war that is waged solely in the name of God against those who perpetrate oppression as enemies of Islam. This supreme sacrifice is the responsibility of all Muslims.

If, however, a section of the Muslims offer themselves for participating in jihad, the whole community is absolved of its responsibility. But if none comes forward, everyone is held guilty. This concession vanishes for the citizens of an Islamic State when it is attacked by a non-Muslim power. In this case, everybody must come forward for jihad.

If the country attacked does not have enough strength to fight back, then it is the duty of the neighboring Muslim countries to offer help. If even they fail, then the Muslims of the whole world must fight the common enemy.

In all these cases, jihad is as much a primary duty as are daily prayers or fasting. One who avoids it is a sinner. His every claim to being a Muslim is doubtful. He is plainly a hypocrite who fails in the test of sincerity and all his acts of worship are a sham, a worthless, hollow show of devotion. (P. 124-125)

Polytheists and infidels should be invited to Islam, and if they reject the invitation, then Jihad be made against them… The objective of Jihad. This objective warrants that one must struggle against Kufr (disbelief) and Shirk (polytheism) and the worship of falsehood in all its forms. Jihad has to continue until this objective is achieved… it is incumbent on the Mulsims to wage Jihad against them to wipe out Kufr and Shirk and raise the banner of Tauhid everywhere… so long as Kufr [disbelief] is present in this world, it is necessary to wage Jihad against it to finish it off, and so long as all the disbelievers do not openly accept Islam and adopt the Islamic way of life, Muslims are duty- bound to make Jihad against them.”
