All CBC’s four articles almost exclusively focused on the demonstration that was held on February 17, 2017 outside of the mosque against radical Islam, Islamization of Canada and the ideology of Islam.

Developments in the case

On February 18, 2017 CIJnews revealed (click HERE) that imams (religious leaders) at the Masjid Toronto mosque recited in 2016 supplications to Allah in support of the “mujahideen (those of engage in jihad) everywhere”, the total destruction of the enemies of Islam and the purification of Al-Aqsa Mosque from the “filth of the Jews.”

On February 20, 2017 Masjid Toronto mosque (click HERE) and the Imam Ayman Elkasrawy (click HERE) issued statements apologizing for the anti-Jewish content of the sermons.

On February 21, 2017 The Muslim Association of Canada (MAC) issued a statement condemning the “inappropriate supplications” that were recited at the Masjid Toronto mosque (click HERE).

On February 22, 2017 seventeen Liberal Jewish and Muslim members of the Parliament have issued a joint statement condemning the Islamic supplications at Montreal and Toronto mosques that called for the annihilation of the Jews (click HERE).

What did CBC tell its readers about the hateful sermons at the mosque?

Only on February 22, 2017, four days after it was first revealed by CIJnews, CBC mentioned the anti-Jewish content of sermons at the mosque.

The following is the text of the supplications as was published by CIJnews:

Imam Ayman Elkasrawy:

O Allah! We ask you… [to give us] victory over the enemies. O Allah! Raise the standing of Islam and the Muslims. O Allah! Give victory (help) to your oppressed slaves all over the world, east to west. O Allah! Give victory (help) to your slaves who believe in the oneness of Allah, O the Lord of the Worlds! O Allah! Destroy the criminals. O Allah! Destroy anyone who inflicts injustice on your slaves, O the Lord of the Worlds! O Allah! Count their number; slay them one by one and spare not one of them. O Allah! Do not defer [it] from them. O Allah! Seize them with the seizure of One Mighty, Omnipotent [referring to a Quranic verse that deals with the punishment Allah inflicted on Pharaoh and his people].

[O Allah!] Give us victory over the disbelieving people… O Allah! Give victory to Islam and raise the standing the Muslims. And humiliate the polytheism and polytheists. O Allah! Give victory (help) to your slaves who believe in the oneness of Allah, O the Lord of the Worlds!O Allah! Give them victory over the criminal people. O Allah! Destroy anyone who killed Muslims. O Allah! Destroy anyone who displaced the sons of the Muslims. O Allah! Count their number; slay them one by one and spare not one of them. O Allah! Purify Al-Aqsa Mosque from the filth of the Jews! O Allah! Purify Al-Aqsa Mosque from the filth of the Jews!

Shaykh Abdool Hamid:

O Allah! Raise the standing of Islam and the Muslims. And humiliate the polytheism, the polytheists, the infidels and the atheists. And Give victory (help) to your slaves who believe in the oneness of Allah. O Allah! Give victory to our oppressed and deprived Muslim brothers and the mujahideen (those who engage in jihad) everywhere. O Allah! Pour on them patience and steadfast their feet. And give them victory over the disbelieving people. And give them victory over the evildoers. And give them victory over the criminals.

The following is CBC’s report on the content of the sermons:

But less than 24 hours later, police received another complaint — this time for alleged hate speech inside the mosque. [Hate crime unit, corporate communications director Mark] Pugash would not confirm that the allegations had to do with anti-Semitic speech, but Masjid Toronto issued a statement earlier this week apologizing for “an inappropriate supplication that was offensive to those of the Jewish faith.”

“Masjid Toronto condemns all forms of hate and racism towards any faith group or others and is committed to offering a safe spiritual space for all congregants,” a statement on the mosque’s website says.

Muslim Association of Canada spokeswoman Memona Hossain told CBC Toronto the apology referred to prayers made by a junior employee in 2016. “The incident occurred when inappropriate supplications, in Arabic, were added without authorization, and in contravention to MAC’s code of conduct,” the organization said in a statement. “We know who made the comments and we have suspended the employee,” said Hossain, adding that the mosque has launched an internal investigation. She said the organization has also extended an apology for the incident to leaders of the Jewish community, including the Toronto Board of Rabbis.

Police said both incidents are now being reviewed by its hate crime unit. Toronto Imam Hamid Slimi said he was shocked to hear of the incident, calling it “unacceptable.” “We must denounce any anti-Semitic act,” adding Canadian Muslims must “not see our relationship with the Jewish communities through the Middle East conflict but rather through the Canadian spirit of respect and common good in addition to the historical connection through our Common father Abraham [Peace be upon him].”

What did CBC hide from its readers?

CBC did not provide any direct quotes from the supplications in question.

CBC’s belated report portrayed the supplications only as “anti-Semitic speech” without mentioning the calls for the annihilation of the enemies of Islam, the disbelieving people and the Jews (“slay them one by one and spare not one of them”).

CBC ignored the supplications at the mosque in support of the “mujahideen everywhere.”

CBC did not mention the names of the imams who recited the hateful supplications and the fact the one of the Imams is a teaching assistant at Ryerson University.

CBC did not report on Imam Ayman Elkasrawy’s apology in which he explained that his supplications were misspoken and referred to the Palestinian – Israeli conflict, implicitly meaning that his statement “slay them one by one and spare not one of them” referred only to the Israeli Jews who “occupy Palestine” and not to all Jews.

CBC did not report on the joint statement by Liberal Jewish and Muslim members of the Parliament condemning the Islamic supplications at Montreal and Toronto mosques that called for the annihilation of the Jews.

CBC did not report on the previous supplications at Montreal mosque that called for the annihilation of the Jews (click HERE).
