Freeland: Canada is “horrified” by reports of chemical weapons attack in Syria

At least 58 people are killed in a suspected in a nerve gas attack on the town of Khan Sheikhoun in the rebel-held Idlib province in Syria. Moscow and Damascus deny responsibility, but according to witnesses the attack was carried out by either Russian or Syrian Sukhoi jets, Fox News reported. In response, Canada’s foreign Ministry tweeted the following statements (April 4, 2017):

Horrified by reports of chemical weapons attack in #Idlib #Syria against civilians, including children.

If confirmed, new use of chemical weapons further weakens credibility of regime as a potential partner for peace #Syria

Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that she will participate in the Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region, on April 5, 2017 in Brussels, Belgium.

According to official statement, Freeland will deliver remarks at the “Future of Syria” session, during which she will underscore Canada’s response to the situation in Syria and the region stress the need for accountability for crimes committed in Syria.

In February 2016, Canada has pledged $1.6 billion over the course of three years towards enhanced security, stabilization, diplomatic engagement, and humanitarian and development assistance in Iraq, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon.
