National President of the Customs and Immigration Union admits that nearly 50% of the illegal migrants who crossed into Manitoba on foot in the last few weeks have been detained because of “serious criminality”, reported the CBC.
One illegal migrant is facing assault and mischief charges for assaulting a female Canada Border and Services Agency (CBSA) officer. According to the RCMP, when 37 year old Ahmed Aden Ali was placed in a cell while his asylum claim was being processed, he threatened to harm CBSA officers, damaged a fire sprinkler and physically assaulted an officer.
Thousands of migrants illegally crossed the Canadian border from the US following Prime Minister Trudeau’s “Welcome to Canada” tweet. “To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada”, Trudeau wrote on January 28, 2017.

Conservative MP Ted Falk, who called the tweet “careless and reckless”, said that Trudeau’s message “is resonating with people who are opportunistic, and in this case, it looks as though we’re seeing people who are actually fleeing the law.
According to the Government of Canada, 2,595 asylum claimants who did not claim asylum at designated Citizenship and Immigration Canada offices were intercepted by the RCMP in January and February of 2017.
Michelle Rempel, Official Opposition Critic for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, called the report “concerning”.
“The thing that’s most offensive is that we were asking the Liberals earlier today why all of the sudden the RCMP weren’t releasing figures on how many people crossed the border”, she said in a video posted to her Facebook page. “I learned [about it] late Thursday, before Easter weekend. It is deplorable that the Liberals tried to bury the report that has such serious implications for the communities and the RCMP officials who have to deal with the crisis”.
An investigative report by The Rebel Media showed the ease with which illegal migrants, most of whom appear to be single men from the Middle East, cross the US-Canada border. When migrants arrive at a nearest crossing, they are shuttled to the border by taxi drivers for a fee, a method which has become somewhat an industry for unscrupulous cabbies who want to make a quick buck.
Migrants also take advantage of an existing loophole in the Safe Third Country Agreement which enables those crossing the Canada-U.S. border illegally to be detained and file an asylum application from within Canada, as opposed to being turned away if they claim asylum at official border crossings and airports.
A new Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted March 8-9, 2017 revealed that Canadians are just as concerned about illegal immigration as their American counterparts, with nearly half of all Canadians (48 per cent) believe that migrants who illegally cross into Canada from the US should be deported back to the US, and 46 per cent disapprove of the way Prime Minister Trudeau is handling the ongoing migrant crisis.
Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, told (March 20, 2017) the Parliamentary Committee on Citizenship and Immigration that the budget 2017 includes $10 million in additional funding for the interim federal health program, which was fully reinstated on April 1, 2016.
“As you know, the interim federal health program provides limited, temporary health coverage to resettled refugees, asylum seekers, and other groups until they are eligible for provincial or territorial health care plans. One of the primary cost drivers of the program is the number of asylum claimants that enter Canada each year, which is simply not foreseeable,” said Hussen.
