Now on Stage: The Shaw Festival

The Shaw Festival is one of Canada’s premiere theatre events, inspired by the famous Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw, and brought to life by lawyer and playwright Brian Doherty, who in 1962 decided to turn his passion for play into a summer event and created the Shaw Festival, which today attracts thousands of visitors to Niagara this time of year.

This season, which runs April 5 to October 15, 11 plays will adorn four stages, along with plenty of activities and events to entertain the whole family.

The three major events of this season are Me and My Girl, based on the story of Pygmalion, and set in the jazzy 1930s; Bernard Shaw’s Saint Joan, about the courageous teenage saviour of France; and a sexy and funny adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Some of the events this year include:

  • A ghost tour of the Shaw theatre, inspired by the stage play Dracula (takes place on June 17, and not to worry, it takes place in the morning!);
  • Open rehearsals, yet to be announced;
  • A Friends Mix and Mingle on April 27 ($20, with beer drinking!);
  • A tour of various gardens in Niagara on June 10 ($25);
  • A Doors Open event on September 16 and 17 at various locations.

There will also be Coffee Concerts, Q&A sessions with member actors of the Shaw ensemble, musical performances, theatre workshops for teens, and many more exciting events.

While at the Shaw Festival, there are many options for overnight stays and getaway packages. For a list of places to stay and other deals, please click HERE.

Also, new this year is the Shaw Express that takes you from downtown Toronto to the festival, on a luxury coach ride. Details HERE.
