Sajjan says learning from his mistake will make him a “better person”

Harjit Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, stated that his acknowledgement of the “mistake” he did in describing his role as the architect of Operation Medusa in Afghanistan, will provide an opportunity for him to become a “better person”.

When asked by a reporter “can you assure Canadians that you haven’t misled them on anything else?”, Sajjan said that he and and his staff “work extremely hard… to making sure that we all have the right information.”

The following is the transcription of the short press conference at Parliament Hill (May 1, 2017):

Harjit Sajjan:

I’d like to apologize for my mistake in describing my role. I would like to retract that and I’m truly sorry for it. I no way like to diminish the great work that my former superiors and our soldiers have done on operations and I’m truly sorry for it.

Question:

If you said it twice is it a lie or is it a mistake?

Harjit Sajjan:

I’m not here to make excuses. I’m here to acknowledge my mistake and apologize for it, learn from it and continue to serve.

Question:

Why did you do it?

Harjit Sajjan:

As I stated, I’m here not to come here to make excuses… I want to be able to acknowledge my mistakes, own it, learn from it and so I continue to serve.

Question:

Some would say that you have a pattern of this type of behavior, talk about what you told the Iraqis or Canadians about Iraq’s reaction C.F. 18 withdrawal, the Kuwait tax benefits. What is your answer to those allegations?

Harjit Sajjan:

As I stated is I’m not here to make excuses for my mistake. I work very diligently in everything that it do and I would like to continue to do that. I want to be able to learn from this mistake, move forward and continue to serve our men and women making our own forces like I’ve always done.

Question:

Can you assure Canadians that you haven’t misled them on anything else?

Harjit Sajjan:

I work extremely hard with all my stuff to making sure that we all have the right information. For example. When I go into to get all the facts, when I go into the mission for example in Iraq, so I can have all the necessary information, so I can make the right decision, the right recommendations to our government and in this mistake that I have made I’m owning it, I’m learning from it and I’ll be a better person for it will get me an opportunity for me to continue to serve the army.
