Article on Trudeau Foundation’s site: The far right argues Islam is incompatible with the West

In an article on Trudeau Foundation’s official site, 2014 Trudeau Scholar Tammara Soma reported on a symposium she and colleagues organized under the title “Pluralism and Islam: Muslim Citizenship in Western Liberal Democracies.”

The event was sponsored by the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, Massey College, and the Munk School of Global Affairs (Islamic and Global Affairs Initiative).

According to Soma, “the symposium set out to explore whether concerns about Islam and the freedom of speech are legitimate, and whether Muslim identities are really in conflict with Canada’s values of pluralism, free speech, and democracy.”

Soma wrote that the far-right’s rhetoric accusing Islam of being incompatible with Western civilizations and arguing that the Islamic State (aka ISIS, Daesh, Caliphate) is based on the teachings of Islam, has caused a spike in Islamophobia and xenophobia that threatens the global peace.

The following is an excerpt from the Soma’s article (March 27, 2017):

Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in Canada, with the number of its adherents projected to triple within 20 years. Those on the far right argue that Islam is incompatible with Western civilizations; they also perpetuate the rhetoric that Daesh/ISIS represents all Muslims. The resulting spike in Islamophobia and anti-immigrant/ anti-refugee rhetoric is threatening the future of global peace.

Soma’s article goes in line with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s position. In two separate interviews to CBC during recent months, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau firmly maintained that Islam is compatible with Western open and secular democracy:

(November 24, 2015): “Canadians are quick to point out that ISIS is wrong, that Islam is not incompatible with the Western secular democracy, a free place like Canada.”

(January 31, 2016): “But on the other hand, we need to make sure that we’re working with communities like the Muslim community for example to demonstrate that Islam is not incompatible with free and open Western societies.”
