Prime Minister Trudeau issued the following statement on the result of France’s May 7, 2017 presidential election:
On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate Emmanuel Macron on his election as the next President of France.
Canada and France share a warm and historic relationship, rooted in our common history, deep cultural ties, people-to-people connections, and strong economic partnership. We also closely collaborate on important international issues as strong allies and partners with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, G7, G20 and La Francophonie.
I look forward to working closely with President-elect Macron in the years ahead as we work together on a progressive agenda to promote international security, increase collaboration in science and technology, and create good, middle class jobs on both sides of the Atlantic. This also includes implementing the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement.
Macron, 39, a former investment banker who has never held elected office, was voted in as France’s youngest head of state since Napoleon after beating his rival Marine Le Pen.
Unlike Le Pen, Macron is staunchly pro-EU and pro-immigration. During the election campaign, Macron, who stands for an open society and progressive world, said “There is not one French culture. There is a culture in France”, a statement which he has since walked back.
There is not a French culture. There is a culture in France, and it is diverse. – President-elect Macron
Macron’s statement echoes that of Prime Minister Trudeau, who in a 2015 interview with the New York Times said:
There is no core identity, no mainstream in Canada. There are shared values — openness, respect, compassion, willingness to work hard, to be there for each other, to search for equality and justice. Those qualities are what make us the first postnational state.
