Foreign nationals who illegally try to enter Canada may be removed: CBSA

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) arrested two people involved in an attempted human smuggling case from the United States to Prescott, Ontario.

A closer inspection of vehicle of a 20-year-old woman from Herndon, Virginia revealed that 21-year-old woman, from Frederick, Maryland, who was hiding in the trunk in an attempt to avoid prosecution in the US.

Both appeared in court on April 21, 2017, convicted, received a sentence of 30 days/ time served. The vehicle was also seized and will be returned upon payment of a minimum penalty of $5,000 CAD.

All persons seeking entry into Canada are legally required to report to the CBSA. Those who fail to report properly will be subject to enforcement action and foreign nationals may be removed”, CBSA’s statement reads.

Leanne Sullivan, Chief of Operations, Prescott port of entry, said: “This example sends an important message to anyone considering participating in the illegal movement of people across our shared border. All persons seeking entry to Canada must present themselves to the CBSA.”
