Canada and Iran to continue talks to resume diplomatic relations

Bahram Qasimi, the spokesperson of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on Monday, May 15, 2017, that Canada and Iran will continue the talks over resumption of the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

He added that the Canadian delegation that recently has visited Tehran held discussions with Iranian officials in a effort to resolve the outstanding issues.

In 2012, Canada suspended diplomatic relations with Iran, expelled all Iranian diplomats and formally listed Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism under the Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act. The decision to suspend diplomatic relations was based on Iran’s support for Assad’s regime, its failure to comply with UN resolutions on its nuclear program and its threats against Israel.

In February 2016, Canada lifted virtually all sanctions against Iran and on June 10, 2016, Minister of Foreign Affairs Stéphane Dion confirmed that Canada started talks “at the official level” with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

According to Qasimi, Canada showed goodwill in relation to Iran’s request to allow Canadian Iranians to vote in Canada in the upcoming presidential elections. However, due to lack of time and other obstacles it is impossible to facilitate the voting in Canada and those who want to exercise their right to vote can do it at the polling stations in the US.
