Bad Jews at Koffler Centre

Coming to The Koffler Centre of the Arts May 26 is the Toronto premiere of Joshua Harmon’s Dark comedy play Bad Jews.

The play centres around three characters who get together at a Manhattan apartment after the death of their Holocaust survivor grandfather. Not to mourn the death of their loved one, but to quarrel over a family heirloom. The fighting between the three cousins exposes not only their greed, but also their different attitudes towards faith, culture assimilation and even their personal romances.

Harmon said that the idea for the play came after listening to the grandchildren of Holocaust survivors speak. Born in 1983 in the US, he is a graduate of Julliard, as well as Northwestern University and Carnegie Mellon.

Bad Jews originated in the Roundabout Theatre in 2012 and was also performed in London, Australia, Canada, Germany, Israel and South Africa. In Israel, it was performed at the Cameri theatre that called it a “brilliant witty play, entertaining and moving, that deals with fundamental questions: What does it mean to be Jewish? And what is the significance of Israel among the Jewish Diaspora”.

Bad Jews premieres on May 26 and runs to June 4, 2017, with a Preview on May 25.

Tickets sell for $30 per adult, and $25 for youth, senior, and arts workers.
