Ontario’s inflation rose 1.9 percent in 12 months

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 1.6% on a year-over-year basis in April, Statistics Canada reported on Friday, May 19, 2017.

The highlights of the report are:

  • Prices were up in six of the eight major components in the 12 months to April.
  • Transportation costs rose 4.2% over the 12-month period, shelter costs rose 2.2%, recreation, education and reading index grew 3.3%, travel tours index rose 9.4%, household operations, furnishings and equipment index rose 0.5% .
  • The food index declined on a year-over-year basis for the seventh consecutive month.
  • Consumer prices in Ontario rose 1.9% in the 12 months to April. The homeowners’ replacement cost index registered a 6.8% year-over-year increase in April.
