Doing Jewish: A Story from Ghana

Doing Jewish: A Story from Ghana was released in Canada in May of 2016. The full-length documentary by Gabrielle Zilkha tells the story of a small community of Jews in Ghana who observe their tradition, oblivious of the fact that it is a worldwide religion. They keep kosher, they circumcise their young ones, and keep other Jewish traditions. And they have been doing so for centuries.

Premiering in last year’s TIFF, A Story from Ghana is about Gabrielle’s journey to Africa where she worked as a volunteer. Alone among a community of Christians, she finds a group of people in the remote village of Sefwi Wiawso, Ghana, who proudly observe their religion.

Filmed over the course of five years, the film centres around the small community and their leader Alex Armah whose dream is to become an official rabbi of his community, as they try to reach out to other Jewish communities in the world.

The film, presented and co-sponsored by City Shul and Jews of Colour will take place at the Wolfond Centre on 36 Harbord Street on Sunday, May 28 at 7 pm.
