Ontario to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne introduced on Friday, May 30, 2017 her plan for Fair Workplaces and Better Jobs for Ontario Workers.

The provincial plan includes a pledge to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. The increase will be phased in over the next 18 months. It will rise to $14 on New Year’s Day, 2018, to $15 on Jan. 1, 2019, and after that it will rise annually with inflation as it does now.

In he speech, Wynne opposed the idea to spur economic growth by cutting back on public services, reducing taxes on the wealthy and slashing regulations on corporations. According to Wynne, raising the minimum-wage is the right and just policy in response to uncertainty under Donald Trump administration and his protectionism policy.
